The custom of "purging" color from society can be found everywhere. David Batchelor writes magnificently about it in his book Chromophobia. There is no place where this is more prevalent than on the cement of city walls. This is where a very literal attempt to subdue the "vulgar" and reinstate "purity" takes place. And it's very much a collaboration.
